Projects and Education in the Community
Ag In The Classroom
This annual event in March pairs Master Gardeners with 1st-grade students who learn how to plant a seed properly. The children delight in this activity and as an added bonus they get to take their seedling home. Average attendance is 1,200 students.
Upper Cumberland Home & Garden Show
Master Gardens host seminars on various gardening subjects. We also have a booth full of gardening information and information on our upcoming classes. This is annual in March.
Girl Scout Service Day
Every April the Girl Scouts descend upon Burgess Falls State Park. With the help of Master Gardeners, they plant native shrubs, prepare the Butterfly Garden for the growing season, and mulch. It’s amazing how much these girls accomplish in one day!
Putnam County Fair
Be sure to stop by our building at the Fairgrounds filled with educational and beautiful displays. Lots of gardening information is available and you are sure to find some great ideas that will work in your own backyard. This occurs annually in early August.
Annual Plant Sale
Held in late April, the plant sale comes at the perfect time for planting a variety of annuals, perennials, and vegetable plants. The plant sale provides locally grown, healthy plants at an affordable price for the community. All proceeds from the sale are used to support other PCMG projects in the community.
Bend of the River
Each fall, Master Gardeners work with 3rd and 4th grade students from Burks Elementary School in Monterey to teach them about plants and seeds. This is an outdoor adventure which combines learning with fun.
Putnam County Courthouse Beautification
In May 2017, a team of Master Gardeners helped beautify the area around the Courthouse by selecting suitable sun and shade plans and filling large planters with cascading flowers and vines. The group provides similar support each Spring.
Pollinator Fields at Cane Creek
Preparations began last fall for this joint project with U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, National Resources Conservation Service, Cookeville Leisure Services, and Putnam County Master Gardeners.
